Trial lawyers must be thinkers before they can be persuaders in the courtroom. Attorney Lawrence A. Durkin has built a successful trial record by carefully planning the elements of each case. "There is a certain 'chess game' that goes on in every case," he says. "It's a challenge to try and stay several moves ahead of the opposing side. This is definitely a business where you have to plan ahead in order to be successful."
Attorney Durkin also appreciates the need to think carefully about the jury's role in each case. "It's not enough to coldly present the facts of a particular case. It's our job to put those facts in perspective for the jury." In order to gain that perspective, he spends time before each trial considering how the evidence might impact the men and women serving on the jury. "Everyone reports for jury duty with a certain set of experiences and values, it would be a mistake to overlook that when planning your case."
Attorney Norman Namey observes, "Larry understands the law but, more importantly, he takes time to understand people and how they might react to a certain set of facts." Attorney Durkin believes that this thoughtful consideration of the jury's perspective is the key to a persuasive presentation at trial. |
